Sonny Bill Williams will rub shoulders with world heavyweight kingpin Tyson Fury ahead of his return to the ring in March yet it’s his association with a champion much closer to home that is proving to be an enduring inspiration.
The 36-year-old Williams, who has an 8-0 record as a fighter, was due to head to the UK on Thursday night to enter a training camp with Fury the undefeated and enigmatic heavyweight star who put an exclamation point on his trilogy with Deontay Wilder with another victory over the American last October.
Williams will soak up as much information as he can before he fights AFL Hall of Famer Barry Hall on March 23 at Sydney’s International Convention Centre. It will be Hall’s second time in a professional boxing ring after he fought a majority draw against Paul Gallen in 2019.
But it’s the rise and rise of a former companion at Sydney’s Rockdale gym that has reminded Williams of the virtues of ceaseless work and tunnel vision. Even before George Kambosos Jnr became the lightweight champion of the world, Williams was taking notice.
Now he says he is in awe of what Kambosos has achieved. The lightweight star is likely to be part of the commentary team when Williams tries to improve his record against the rugged Hall.
“I was lucky enough to train alongside George when he was coming up back in the Rockdale days. He was always a beast the beast that is Ferocious Kambosos. I saw that at an early age,” Williams said.
“The special thing about that guy is that most days at training, his partner would be there and they are still together, they have some beautiful kids. It shows how much it means to him.
The event will be shown on Stan Event, which represents the first foray into pay-per-views for the Nine-owned streaming service (Nine is the publisher of this website). It puts it in competition with Main Event, which has historically broadcast boxing PPV’s via the Foxtel platforms.
Sonny Bill Williams v Barry Hall Boxing (March 23) will be available for Stan customers to purchase exclusively on Stan Event for $50. For more information visit https://www.stan.com.au/turfwar
